Some practitioners will wait for the test results and administer the shot after it's been confirmed that you're not producing antibodies. If you're not, an injection of Rh immune globulin or "Rhogam" at 28 weeks will keep your body from producing antibodies. If the blood test shows that your body is producing antibodies, your baby will be monitored for related problems for the rest of your pregnancy. If you're Rh-negative, an extra tube of blood will be drawn for an antibody screen, which checks to see whether your body is producing antibodies against your baby's potentially Rh-positive blood. After you drink the sugary beverage, either in the office or just before your appointment, you'll have your blood drawn after exactly one hour to check your blood glucose level. You don't need to fast or avoid drinking liquids before this test. Two-Step Test – one test to screen, the next to diagnose There are two types of tests to screen for gestational diabetes: the two-step test and the one-step test. ( All women are routinely screened between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy, at the end of the second trimester.) It's not uncommon to have a small amount of sugar in your urine once in a while during pregnancy, but if you have a large amount or it happens often, your practitioner will order the blood test to check for gestational diabetes earlier than planned. If you have high blood pressure without these other symptoms or urine protein, you could have gestational hypertension. Other symptoms of preeclampsia can include sudden weight gain or swelling, liver or kidney abnormalities, persistent headaches, or vision changes. Protein in the urine can be a sign of a urinary tract infection or, if accompanied by high blood pressure, a sign of preeclampsia. Your urine might be tested quickly each visit. Depression during pregnancy, also known as perinatal depression, is common and affects up to 1 in 7 women, or 15 percent. They'll also want to know how you're feeling in general, both physically and emotionally. Are you dealing with any aches and pains? Are you suffering from heartburn? Constipation? Frequent headaches? What have you tried to combat these symptoms?.Have you been able to keep up taking your prenatal vitamins?.Have you been leaking fluid or had any vaginal spotting or bleeding?.Are you feeling the baby move yet? (And later: Is your baby moving as often as before?).Some questions you can expect from your practitioner are: Your healthcare provider will review your chart and follow up on issues that were raised at your previous appointment, as well as go over test results that have come back. You also may have to leave a urine sample to test for protein and sugar. At the beginning of each visit, you can expect to get your blood pressure and weight checked.
